The New Year, yes it is filled with thoughts of resolution and new beginning. This time of year the key word seems to be new. I found myself wondering what it is we love about new things. Remember as a child getting that special gift. For me, it was a new hot wheel or match box car. They were perfect and shiny, fast. My wife and I ran to Bed Bath & Beyond yesterday. We have been working on redecorating our bedroom and I wanted to get one more honey-do off the list in 08. New sheets, quilt, shams and pillows, oh yes and the bed skirt, in colorful jewel tones to contrast the neutral walls. A new table and stools created a reading or conversation area; one I had always envisioned. I must say slipping into bed last night was great. Everything new and clean, I felt that feeling again.
This is something special; more than just striving for more stuff, more than being materialistic. It translates into our longing spiritually to be restored, healed and made new. As with the toys and decorations, all things age and it just isn’t the same. It seems the moment of that first scratch on the toy is as memorable as originally receiving it. How could I let this happen? It was so special to me and now look at it. We try to ignore it but it is not going to be the same. We move on.
We like things that are beautiful, shiny and flawless; it is a wonderful remnant of the garden. This world was perfect and we long to have that back. Yes, Christ came to offer us salvation, but there is more. He came to make us new that we might have life in full (John 10:10). A more abundant life now! Everyday the attacks come - scars, dents scratches, they are inevitable. Sure we can try to hide or ignore them, or we can allow Jesus to restore us completely. That’s what He came to do, objective number one. To heal the broken hearted and set the captive free (Is. 61:1, Lk. 4:18) as many times as necessary. He came not only to give us eternal life, but to give us the ability to live a powerful life while in this world.
Writing in my journal this morning and seeing all the possibilities for the upcoming year is exciting, filled with milestones. My son Kyle will turn 18 and graduate from high school, Evan is going to be 10, and Sheri and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage. More than anything I want to make an impact on this world and certainly the lives around me. Let’s all stop looking at the scars God has long erased. Embrace the good and noble heart He has restored in us.
